For me, it was important to make a film that
would also reach people that maybe don't like
football at all, because this experience was
not just about kicking a ball, but much more
about passion, humanity and unity. - Johan
Kramer, director
In an uncertain world, The Other Final is
a story about how sport can bring two cultures
together.
The Other Final tells the story of a remarkable
football game, played on 30th June 2002, the
same day as the World Cup final in Japan.
It was between the world's two lowest FIFA-ranked
teams; Bhutan and Montserrat, (no. 202 and
203). Bhutan is a remote mountainous Himalyan
kingdom and Montserrat is a small Caribbean
island with seven active volcanoes. The game
was played in Thimphu, Bhutan.
The film uses football as a device to explore
the contrasting cultures of the teams, and
shows how football can be a global language
uniting people. The story, told through interviews
and beautifully photographed on 16mm, is of
a unique cultural meeting. It begins on Montserrat
and culminates at the game attended by 25,000
spectators in Bhutan.
