This is a documentary about Mickael Suphi,
a very normal boy who becomes a torturer.
In the local soccer club, and also among the
girls of the small Belgian town of Halle,
he is a star. When Mickael performs his military
service in his native country of Turkey, the
clever lad from Belgium draws the attention
of officers of the 'counter-guerilla' unit
and is given another post. In a secret torture
school in the basement of the officer's hotel
in Eskesehir, he is trained as an 'interrogation
specialist' in 10 days.
'They aroused the beast in me,' Mickael recalls
today. However when he is supposed to torture
a child he refuses to carry out the order
and flees the country in dramatic circumstances.
He leaves his family and ' for fear of revenge
' leads an underground existence in Africa
and Spain. A shattering story of cowardice
and guilt, of courage and the will to live.
