Helen is a London housewife barely coping
with her two kids and their grandfather while
husband, John, is away on an aid mission in
Eastern Europe. He has been gone many months
and Helen is desperately anxious that he should
come home. John senses this and begins the
perilous journey home, while Helen goes about
her daily routine. Taking the kids to school
one morning, she is killed in a car accident.
Many miles away, John is unaware of his wife's
fate, as Helen herself is unaware that she
is dead. She is seen arising from the pavement,
walking away as if the accident had never
happened and returning home, where her spirit-self
re-imagines and reassesses her domestic life
as John negotiates his way by car, truck,
horse drawn wagon and foot across a brutal
landscape of thuggish soldiers and displaced
villagers.
The kids and their grandfather must come
to terms with Helen's death; John must travel
across a war-torn land as he tries to reach
home; and Helen must stand helplessly observing
her own existence as it comes back to haunt
her.
