David Lynch's classic biopic of John Merrick (a tour de force by Hurt), a hideously disfigured man whom though suffering a life of heinous torture and ridicule, maintained both intelligence and dignity. When Dr Frederick Treaves, played by Anthony Hopkins, rescues him from the travelling freak show in which he resides, Merrick becomes a wonder of the medical world, and finds a chance to create a new life for himself. But there are some who still stand in his way.
