When six-year-old Dalia dies in an unfortunate
road accident, the shock of the event forces
the members of her family to find ways of
eluding the pain. Her mother, Dulce, throws
herself into her work as the hostess of a
television show. Little brother, Damian, undergoes
therapy and Derek, the father, goes deeper
into himself.
Eleven years later and Dulce has successfully
reinvented herself as a crusader for the hopeless
and persecuted though her show has become
increasingly sensational. Damian, now a star
student, has fallen in love with Fabiana,
a dancer. He unconsciously finds in her a
resemblance to his forgotten sister and quite
literally submerges her in this fantasy. Simultaneously,
Derek believes that his daughter, whom he
now sees as a teenager, is coming for a visit.
While Derek is still openly haunted by the
events of that fateful night it becomes clear
that, despite the pretence they are over it,
none of them have really left the road where
Dalia died.
Eventually, they all come to terms with it
in almost imperceptible ways. About The Living
is a magnificent spectacle, managing to amplify
the most intimate moments of the characters
interior lives while avoiding emotional excess.
