Jameson Award for Best Irish Short Film
Full Circle, Dir. Simon Fitzmaurice
The jury felt that the winning film, which is also a debut
film, manages to create an entire world through very simple
detail. For its ability to tell a story with tenderness and
humour, this year's Jameson Short Film Award for Best Irish
Short goes to Simon Fitzmaurice for Full Circle.
Special Mention
Fall Into Half-Angel, Dir. Roisin Loughrey
For its powerful conveyance of the themes of love and trust
in a simple and poetic way, the Jury wishes to give special
mention to Roisin Loughrey's Fall Into Half-Angel.
Claire Lynch Award for Best First Short by an Irish Director
Two Fat Ladies Dir. John Hayes With great performances,
a tight script and creative cinematography and direction,
this film shows great style and maturity and the jury felt
it was a tremendous achievement for a first film. The Claire
Lynch Award for Best First Short Film by an Irish Director
goes to Two Fat Ladies by John Hayes.
Best International Short Film
The Jury would like to thank Cork Film Festival for an excellent
selection of international short films. After much deliberation
through the night, the International Jury of the 48th Cork
Film Festival announce that the winner is: United We Stand,
Norway directed by Hans Peter Moland An original, intelligent,
and moving film, on the political dynamics of the individual
and the collective.
The Jury would also like to award Special Commendations
to the following films: Crackerbag, Australia, directed
by Glendyn Ivin
The jury found this a universal heartfelt film about the disappointments
of life.A truly wonderful film.
The Man Without a Head, France, directed by Juan Solanas
The film makes clear that in life a man can live without a
head but not without a heart.
Fragile, Germany, directed by Sikander Goldau
Fragile captures a time when one feels a halfway point in
life, loved yet alone. Fragile is superbly photographed with
a powerful use of mise-en-scene.
Best ŒMade in Cork' Short
Shhh! Dir. Peter Gleeson
A taut and suspenseful drama, both cinematic and ambitious,
this short shows great promise.
Special Mention
Numero Uno Joe, Dir. Gillian Morrison A gentle and intimate
documentary which treats its subject with immense respect,
while revealing his very particular world.
Audience Award for Best Irish Short
Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom, Dir. Daniel O'Hara
Audience Award for Best International Short
Rave Against The Machine, England, Dir. James Harvey,
Richard Rudy, Stevan Riley, Holly Lubbock
'OutLook' Award for Best Lesbian and Gay Film
Did Anyone Notice Us? Dir. Edmund Lynch This important
documentary looks at archival records of twenty years of individual
courage and campaigning from 1973 to 1993. An invaluable history
and record of the lesbian and gay community in Ireland.
Award of the Festival
Love Me Or Leave Me Alone, England, Dir. Duane Hopkins
A dark and vivid portrait of a teenage relationship struggling
against the restrictions of small-town life. Beautifully acted
and directed, with an impeccable sense of truth.
The UIP Director's Awards, in association with Screen Producers
Ireland,
were also presented at Cork Film Festival:
Best Feature Film Director was John Crowley for Intermission.
Best Animation Short Director was Rory Bresnihan for
The Butterfly Collector.
Best Live Action Short Director was Sean McGuire for
Ocras.
